Wild Winter Weather Can Create Water Damage In New York City
1/11/2022 (Permalink)
Last night temperatures dropped precipitously for easily the coldest day/night of the 2021-22 winter to-date for the northeast. Many areas of New England, New York & New Jersey will see significant warming over the next few days before another cold front and potential snow storm hits these areas Friday night into Saturday. These temperature swings can lead to property damage. Be aware of ice and snow buildup on your properties which can lead to ice dams and cause structural damage to buildings.
In New York City this maybe especially prevalent in buildings with flat and older roof designs. For those rooftops that already have snow and ice on top of them this quick thawing and freezing eventallows water to seep between shingles and other cracks, freeze and then expand creating an opening that allows warm air from inside the building out and melts ice into water which in turn gets into the building.
